The J-200 was introduced in 1937 after Gibson built its first one as a custom build for country music performer Ray Whitley. The first models were shipped in 1938. It has 17” at the lower bout making it an inch wider than the J-185.
This guitar has its own unique sound and feel making it well loved by many. The tight waist makes it much easer and comfortable to play and hold on your lap than it would first appear. Many famous musicians find this to be their go-to instrument…the list is very long. These guitars were highly appointed and featured the famous mustache bridge which some find a bit over the top. It also can be a very expensive repair if you ever have to have one replaced or repaired.
These guitars are also famous for the large, some would consider oversized, engraved pick-guards. They also sported gold plated individual tuners, bound fretboard with lots of pearl on the fingerboard. These are truly wonderful instruments, sonically and visually strong!
